Glendale Trail and Green Space

Glendale Trail lies in the District of Saanich one of thirteen areas that form the Capital Regional District of British Columbia. This multi-user trail is about seven hundred and fifty meters. It is paved or covered with loose gravel for much of its length. The trail connects at Mann Road, near the junction with Wilkenson, to Interurban Road near West Saanich Road.  The trail was developed to form a more connected trail system, called the Centennial Trails, so that existing trails in this area were connect during two-thousand and six. Glendale Trail connects to Interurban Rail Trail and the Colquitz Creek multi-user trails.  The green spaces near the Glendale Trail include an area was once the site of Glendale Lodge Hospital. This old hospital building has been redeveloped into the Vancouver Island Technology Park and extensively renovated. The trail also provides access to an area of wetlands in the Glendale Valley. The Glendale Trail allows you to enjoy meadows, wetlands, called Viaduct Flats, and second growth coniferous forests. Large Douglas-fir, broadleaf maple and western red cedar trees from the canopy over the and cleavers, Oregon beaked moss and electrified cat’s tail moss lie under the Oregon grape, snowberry and ocean spray bushes. It provides good access for bird watchers with birder platforms and birder hides. Along the way take a break at the Horticultural Center of the Pacific (formerly known as Glendale Gardens and Woodlands) and enjoy the diverse themed plantings in forty-two hectares of cultivated lands for a nominal fee. The Trail is a connector route for those travelling from the Interurban Rail Trail and takes you past the Glendale Gardens, Camosun College – Interurban Campus and the Vancouver Island Technology Park. This is a good place to walk in your backyard.

Glendale Trail from Elk Road (48° 29.997’N 123° 25.141’W),

Glendale Trail can be accessed from the Trans-Canada highway. Exit on to Helmcken Road and cross over the highway onto Helmcken Road to head northward. Continue along as the road then turn left onto Interurban Road at the intersection. Follow Interurban Road watching for signs that provide access to Camosun College on the left. Turn right onto Markham Road and continue along toward the Technology Park off Markham Road. Paid parking lots are available in this area. The park can be accessed from a small parking area off of Interurban Road. This parking area holds about 8 vehicles and is about 200m further along Interurban Road past Markham Road near Quayle Road or Viaduct Ave West  or bordering the Technology Park off Markham Road. The Glendale Trail passes Layritz Park before it connects to the Colquitz River Trail.
