Sayward Hill Park lies in the District of Saanich one of thirteen areas that form the Capital Regional District of British Columbia. This park is roughly shaped like an elongated ‘L” as it extends from Cordova Bay Road south toward Worthington Street and Del Monte Avenue then eastward toward Sayward Hill Crescent. The gavel and bark mulch trail is about a kilometer long with access from several side streets. The blackberry bushes grow along much of the length of the trail. The section from Sayward Hill Crescent to Worthington playground is a gradual climb of fifty meters over a distance of about two hundred meters up the raised glaciofluvial deposits. A corpse of second growth cedar and fir trees provide a dense canopy over a section of the trail on the rainy days. Near Worthington Street is an open grass covered area that is just large enough to toss a frisbee. It hosts a playground with swings and slides, locally known as Worthington Park. A small ravine borders the parkland to the east. Ferns can been seen between the trees. The view from the playground is to the northeast. Enjoy sea views of Haro Strait part of the Salish Sea. The Gulf Islands of James and Sidney may be visible as well as the San Juan Islands in the United States. Sayward Hill Park borders on the old Sayward Gravel Pit that was mined for gravel aggregates for many years. This park, at about 100meter above sea level, provides excellent vantage points to view Haro Strait and the Gulf and San Juan Islands. This is a good place to walk in your backyard.
