Agate Park is situated in the District of Saanich, one of thirteen municipalities comprising the Capital Regional District of British Columbia. Encompassing less than a quarter of a hectare, this municipal park provides convenient public access to the seashore. Visitors can enjoy the picnic shaded by Douglas fir trees before taking a leisurely walk along the shores of Haro Strait, a body of water forming part of the Salish Sea. The park’s gently sloping shoreline allows for an easy launch of paddleboards, kayaks, and other small watercraft. Alternative access to the beach is via the staircase at east end of Walema Road, which is about 200 metres to the north of Agate Park.
Agate Park offers an appealing environment for dog walking; however, as an attempt to share the beach dogs are not permitted on the beach after 9:00 a.m. from May through August. Dedicated as a municipal park in 1928, Agate Park reflects the area’s early development as a popular seaside cottage community. As well, long before this formal designation, the location was valued for its natural beauty and accessibility, serving as a favored gathering place for seaside recreation. Archaeological studies have also been conducted within the park to better understand the Indigenous history and traditional use of this coastal landscape, which holds cultural and historical significance extending well before European settlement. This is a great place to walk in your backyard.
