Municipal Garden – Sidney

The seaside community of Sidney has created some unique landscaping on their municipal garden. Sidney is one of thirteen communities that from the Capital Regional District of British Columbia located on the southern end of Vancouver Island. It lies on the eastern shore of the north end of the Saanich Peninsula.This is a community made for walking. Exploring your backyard in Sidney means relatively flat terrain and well maintained gardens. The Sidney Municipal Hall on Sidney Avenue and Third Street is fronted by lovely garden beds and grass areas that surround a war memorial. The cenotaph is a cobble stone cairn with three plaques to commemorate the lives of those whom fought in the wars of 1914, 1939 and 1950. The flag post flies the veteran’s flag, provincial flag and national flag. The memorial honors those from both of the communities of Sidney and North Saanich.  A bench embossed with the words lest we forget is on the south side of the cenotaph. A low rock wall forms a barrier along the north side of the cenotaph and separates it from the lawn area. This garden can be enjoyed while conducting business with the town or just for a leisurely stroll in the neighborhood. Ornamental plum trees provide shade over the garden along Sidney Street. Stop by to enjoy the unique tulip (Liriodendron tulipifera) and Indian bean (Catalpa bignonioides) trees. A lovely Norway maple (Acer platanoides) tree can also be seen here. Take a moment to pause at the memorial and the three flags near Sidney Avenue. Beacon Park and Sidney Elementary Green Space are nearby.

Municipal Gardens of Sidney can be reached from the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1). Exit Hwy1 onto McKenzie Avenue to reach the Pat Bay Highway (Hwy 17). Head north along Hwy17 as it leads past the airport to reach Sidney on the Saanich Peninsula.  Turn at Beacon Avenue to head east then turn left onto Third Street. Parking is available along the roadside and at the back of the building. The closest bus passes along Resthaven Drive.
